DIY: Double Layer Boy's Bow Tie
An adorable ring bearer is not complete without a matching bow tie. Since my wedding color theme was coral, I went to the fabric store and bought a coral fabric square. I used about a fourth of it to make this easy to make bow tie. It took me about an hour from start to finish and the following measurements are made for a boy's neck circumference of about 12-14inches. :)
Materials:- iron (mine is super OLD school - hehe)
- cotton fabric of your choice
- fabric scissors
- velcro (1 inch)
- sewing machine
1) Cut a 2" x 3.5" piece of fabric, looking at the "right side" of the fabric, fold the short edges back about 1/8" on the top and bottom.
2) Fold in half but do NOT crease the fold yet. The "right side" of the fabric should be in the inside.
3) Sew the edges together about 1/8" or 1/4".
4) Flip inside out. You should have a cylinder. Now you can press it flat and iron a nice neat crease on the side opposite of the seam. Put to the side.
The Bow:
1) Take your 5" x 10" piece of fabric and find the center line. I would try to do this without actually making a crease. Take both top and bottom edges and fold them to meet in the center. Iron down the creases.
2) Next, fold the left and right sides over to the center. DO NOT crease here. This is your bow that will be seen. Do NOT iron flat.
3) Squish the center OR accordion fold the whole thing to make it look like a bow. Take any color thread and sew the center and all of the creases in the middle to hold its bow shape.
Optional Step: If you notice in the picture, it looks like there are two layers of bows. Just repeat the bow tie portion and make one slightly larger to go behind the first bow tie you made before you sew the two bows together.
*NOTE: Secure the bow crease shape in the center where the center loop will be able to hide the thread.
4) Wrap your Bow Tie Center around the bow and whip stitch it in place.
Bow Tie Strap:
1) Fold in both left and right sides about 1/8" of your 4" x 15" strip of fabric.
2) Next, fold your fabric in half (length-wise). Iron in place.
3) Sew a seam of 1/8" with whatever color thread you want. Remember this thread will be seen. I just used white since there was a bit of white in my fabric and I wanted a bit of subtle contrast.
4) Sew on your Velcro (one on one end on the front and one on the other end on the back).
5) Slide the strap through your bow tie center loop (as pictured above) and you're done!
I hope you found this helpful and please share what bows you come up with.
